DAAD Masters Scholarships for Sub-Saharan Africans in Ukraine

The Russian-Ukraine war has disrupted academic activities in the Ukraine region and all international students have been forced to return back home, many of whom were in the middle of their studies at the university as a result of the closure of the universities in the country.

The German Academic Exchange Service has therefore decided to support the international students who are still studying in the country. The program is open for Master’s students whose studies are interrupted because of the war and therefore the scholarship holder is either a national of a Sub-Saharan African country whose Master’s studies are interrupted or students who were studying in any of the universities that were closed down in the Ukraine region.

The Scholarship is meant to help them complete their studies at a university back home or within the region (i.e. Sub-Saharan Africa) and it is a response by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to the difficult situation of the students and their communities.

The scholarship will provide tuition and a stipend to cover living expenses during the period of study at a higher education institution in the home country or within the region. The scholarship intends to enable students to continue their academic careers without the impact of the war on their studies.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Started master’s In Ukraine

The scholarship is for students the war interrupted their academic careers and therefore they could not complete their Master’s studies as stipulated in the academic calendar. The award is specifically for students who had started or were about to start their Master’s studies in Ukraine before 24 February 2022 and is a recognized student at a Ukrainian higher education institution.

  1. Nationals of Sub-Saharan Country

The scholarships will only be awarded to students who are nationals of a Sub-Saharan African country. It is not advisable to apply if you are either a resident or national of a country outside Africa.

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree

The scholarship applicant must have a Bachelor’s Degree certificate from a recognized university in order to be eligible for the scholarship with a minimum of a Second Class Lower Division to enable them to continue their studies without any difficulties.

  1. Language Proficiency

The applicant should have an excellent command of the language of instruction at the university where they are being considered for admission.

  1. Strong Motivation and Commitment

Strong motivation and commitment to complete their Master’s studies in their home country or within the region will be key factors considered in assessing the application.

  1. Undergraduate completion status must not exceed 6 years

The applicant must have generally completed their last university degree not more than 6 years ago at the time of application.

Student Eligible Fields:

The scholarships are available to students in the following fields or areas of study:

  1. Original Field of Study in Ukraine

The scholarship program is for students to continue their Master’s studies in a field that was previously commenced in Ukraine, as long as the Master’s study was interrupted by the war.

  1. Similar Field of Study in Ukraine

Students who do not have the opportunity to continue their studies in the original field because it’s not available in their preferred institution can choose a Masters’s program that is similar to the original.

  1. New Field of Study in the Region

Students also have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship in another Master’s program located in Sub-Saharan Africa if their qualification meets up with the admission requirements of their previous studies.

  1. Not for medical programs that last more than two years

Students who are seeking a scholarship for any medical-related field that is intended to last longer than 2 years are not eligible for the scholarship. However, if the medical fields are related to nursing, pharmacy, and other relevant fields that can be linearized to bachelor’s and master then the applicant will be considered.

Duration of Scholarship:

The duration of the scholarship is usually up to two years. The exact duration will depend on the academic calendar of the programs and whether it involves a semester or not. Most study periods are semesters however some may not be which include summer school, academic breaks, mid-semester breaks, and the like. There are some Master’s programs that do not use the semester system and are on a continuous basis.

Scholarship Benefits

Tuition Fees:

Up to 2,500 EUR will be awarded to the students during their Master’s studies in Ukraine. The scholarship will usually be paid in installments, which can be made upon confirmation of the start of the program.

Study and Research Allowance

The scholarship for these students will also include a study and research allowance – 460.00 EUR annually.

Printing Allowance

The scholarship will also include a printing allowance of 400.00 EUR towards the end of the scholarship period. The payment usually depends on the academic calendar of each university and institution.

Other Benefits

Student Scholars will also have the opportunity to apply for food, travel, and accommodation stipends from their home country, as long as it is submitted with the application and in accordance with the planned study schedule.

This scholarship program is part of a larger joint effort between institutions of higher education in Ukraine and the Sub-Saharan Africa region to assist students from Sub-Saharan African countries with their Master’s studies. How to apply

All candidates should apply online via the DAAD portal. All applications are considered by a selection committee. After submitting their application, the information will be forwarded to an expert committee consisting of selected professors and directors of institutions of higher education in Ukraine.

The final decisions will be communicated to all applicants by email.
