Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship
Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships are delivered by the Australian Government to support both domestic and international students undertaking Research Doctorate and Research Master’s degrees.
Monash University is a public research university based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Named for prominent World War I general Sir John Monash, it was founded in 1958 and is the second oldest university in the state. The university has several campuses, four of which are in Victoria (Clayton, Caulfield, Peninsula, and Parkville), and one in Malaysia. Monash also has a research and teaching Centre in Prato, Italy, a graduate research school in Mumbai, India, and a graduate school in Suzhou, China. Monash University courses are also provided at other locations, comprising South Africa.
The Good Universities Guide places the Clayton, Caulfield, Parkville, and Peninsula campuses of Monash in the group of universities most difficult to gain admission to in Australia for domestic students, with each campus getting an Entry Standards mark of 5/5. Monash has the uppermost demand for places among domestic high school graduates of any Australian university in Victoria. In 2009, one in four applicants put Monash as their first preference.
This equates to more than 15,000 first preferences from Victorian high school leavers. Of the top 5% of high school graduates in Victoria, more choose Monash than any other institution. In 2010, almost half of the top 5% of high school leavers chose to attend Monash the highest of any Victorian university by quite some margin. In 2009, among students with a “perfect” ENTER score of 99.95 (i.e. students in the top 0.05% of high school applicants), 63 made an application for Monash.
Times Higher Education ranked Monash University 18th in the world in 2021 Impact Ratings. In 2021, QS World rated Monash University #2 globally for Pharmacy & Pharmacology, #15 for Education & Training, and #15 for Nursing.
About 65% of Monash students have domestic citizenship (i.e. they are citizens of the country in which their main campus is situated). Around 39% are international students. The international students are from over 100 different countries and speak around 90 different languages. Over 50% of Monash students have a language other than English as their mother language.
The Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), since 2010 founded on the Caulfield Campus, is the result of an initiative started in 1961 when the inaugural Vice-Chancellor Louis Matheson shaped a fund for the purchase of artworks by then living Australian artists. The founding of the museum reflected a wish by the university’s founders to create the modern Australian university and to enrich the cultural life of students, staff, and visitors.
Monash is a member of Australia’s Group of Eight research universities, a member of the ASAIHL, and is the only Australian member of the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities, and National Academies.
Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship covers the cost of:
- course tuition fees; and
- a single Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) policy for international students.

Eligibility for the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship
You must be one of the following:
- An Australian citizen
- A New Zealand citizen
- Australian permanent resident
- Australian humanitarian visa holder
- An International student
You must meet the following criteria:
- meet the eligibility standards for admission to a research degree (domestic students only);
- meet Monash’s competitive scholarship designation process conditions (international students only); and
- meet Monash English language ability requirements.
Note that Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship can not be transferred between higher education providers.
How to Apply for the Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship
Application for graduate research scholarships is done at the time of applying for your course unless you are already registered. Whether you are a new or present student, the same application process is used for both admission and/or scholarship through our Applicant Portal. You do not need to determine which scholarship you are applying for as you are automatically assessed for all graduate research scholarships.
The application deadline for this scholarship is August 31, 2022.
